Social Protection Responses to COVID-19

WIEGO has produced a series of briefs to analyze the Social Protection Responses to COVID-19, drawing from WIEGO’s database of social protection responses to COVID-19, in order to support movements in their advocacy efforts to expand social protection to informal workers in this period of crisis.

These briefs comprise country cases of measures to protect informal workers from risks from lockdowns and from the pandemic itself. These are not policy recommendations, but are instead tools to share initiatives and policies implemented in different parts of the world: https://www.wiego.org/social-protection-responses-covid-19

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after touching raw materials and other things that have been handled by others. Do not touch your mouth, eyes or nose after touching the materials or any other surface.
  • If you have an employer (contractor), ask him for additional time to complete work, and demand for safety material like disposable masks, alcohol-based sanitizers and soaps to keep yourselves safe at work.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze with a handkerchief or your sleeve. Don’t catch your cough in your hands, otherwise you could spread it.
  • Avoid attending large gatherings- wedding, birthdays, or working in groups.
  • If you can’t avoid crowded places – like when fetching water or market areas – then,  keep distance (preferable one meter) from people. Wash your hands when you return home.
