HomeNet South Asia (HNSA), in collaboration with WIEGO, hosted a virtual parallel event at NGO CSW67 Event on “Home-Based Workers – Organising for Change”. A total of 115 participants were present virtually in this virtual session. In this panel discussion, home-based workers from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, South Africa, and Uganda had the chance to share their real-world experiences of effective organising using digital platforms.
At the same time, it brought attention to the challenges and efforts made by home-based workers to increase their visibility and recognise new opportunities so they may act quickly to become an organised category of workers in the informal sector. Ms. Shalini Sinha from WIEGO spoke about Bridging the Digital Gap in India and Registering the Informal. The key takeaways from this entire registration process included organisations playing a crucial role for linkages in the entire registration process, awareness raising among workers in the informal sector, resolving technical issues, liaising with the government, and facilitation documentation.
