HomeNet South Asia e-launched a report, “Homeworkers in Garment Supply Chains: Research from Karachi, Pakistan” on the International Labour Day: 1st May 2023.
This report presents the findings of the research which HomeNet South Asia Trust (HNSA) conducted with women homeworkers (HWs) between December 2020 and January 2021. The data for this report was collected through a survey in Karachi , Pakistan by HNSA affiliate HNP (HomeNet Pakistan).
Highlights of the study:
- HBW organisations need to make efforts to unionize HomeWorkers in garment supply chains so that they can demand their rights and benefits in a strong voice. These organisations need to educate HomeWorkers about the importance of written agreements, safety measurements, work tracking systems, and social security benefits.
- Suppliers need to compel their subcontractors to have regular discussions with HomeWorkers that help promote transparency and improve working conditions of HomeWorkers.
- Brands are in the privileged position to make decisions about who can produce for them, they can compel their suppliers to ensure basic rights of HomeWorkers in every aspect.
