COTRADO ALAC, the regional network of home-based worker organisations from Latin America and the Caribbean, recently held its seventh regional meeting in the headquarters of the Union of Workers of the Popular Economy (UTEP) in Buenos Aires, Argentina from March 21st to the 23rd.
Delegates from its member organisations from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, Peru, Uruguay were in attendance. In addition, guests from organisations from Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala also participated.
The aim of the meeting was to discuss the situation of home-based workers in the region, the challenges and proposals to move forward organising the unions, and to agree on the steps to be taken to strengthen the regional organisation in the coming years.
The main items on the agenda for this meeting were:
- Presentation by representatives of Brazil from the headquarters of COTRADO ALAC on the accountability of the organisation
- Discussion and approval of the political, strategic and financial plan 2024- 2025
- Proposals from COTRADO ALAC members to improve its functioning and presence in Latin America
Additionally, they shared their experiences with the Argentinean Federation during visits to Polo Textil Copacabana and Centro Infantiles de Recreación y Aprendizaje (CIRA) in Buenos Aires.
Overall, the regional meeting was filled with lively debates and innovative proposals to bolster the organisation of home-based workers and promote unity among the working class in the region and globally. The exploitation of home-based workers is a widespread issue in Latin America, making it crucial for them to stand united. They are hopeful that they can continue to strengthen bonds and solidarity across the continent.
