HomeNet Africa held two consultative meetings with HNI affiliates, as well as national networks and organisations in Uganda and Rwanda, on September 11-12, 2024.

The consultative meeting in Uganda brought together representatives from 10 HNI affiliates: Afri-Youth Support Organisation (AYSO), Envirojewels, Tukolerewamu, Maaruf Development Group, Patience Pays Uganda, Children and Youth Empowerment Link (CAYEL), Uganda Youth at Risk Development Network (UYDNET), Kangulumira United Women Weavers Association (KUWWA), Galima Fights AIDS/HIV Initiative (GFHAI), and Biyinzika Weavers Group (BWG), as well as members from Women In Informal Network Uganda (WIENU) and the Social Protection Platform Uganda (SPPU). The consultation focused on ongoing efforts related to market access, skills sharing, economic empowerment through savings, and participation in governance meetings, and it also elaborated on the “SITUKA” project, which aims to organise home-based workers (HBWs) in Uganda with support from RAISE-Denmark to consolidate the constitutional development and governance structures of the Ngalo Buwereza Organization (NBO). Presentations by WIENU and SPPU highlighted areas for potential partnership.

The consultation with SYTRIECI-Rwanda included participation from SYTRIECI membership led by the Secretary General and staff, addressing the following topics: a review of work completed in the previous financial year, opportunities and challenges encountered, current activities involving the mobilisation of village savings associations (VSLAs), participation in governance discussions, documentation of SYTRIECI member trades—including home-based workers, street vendors, domestic workers, and waste pickers—and fundraising opportunities.
