On this International Home-based Workers Day, HomeNet International, the global network of membership-based home-based workers’ organizations, stands united in our commitment to advocating for the rights and recognition of home-based workers worldwide. Home-based workers (HBWs) make significant contributions to both local and global economies while often grappling with a lack of legal recognition, social protections, and precarious working conditions.
HNI represents more than 1.3 million home-based workers from 71 organizations across 30 countries. In 2023, we launched our first campaign on the ratification of ILO Convention 177. It saw the participation of our affiliates from Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Georgia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Kenya, and Tanzania.
We thank the Thai government for its positive steps toward recognizing the need to ratify ILO Convention 177 and for committing to review the existing Homeworkers Protection Act of 2010 during our recent meeting with the Honorable Labour Minister, Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn. This progress serves as an inspiring example for other nations to follow.
We call upon the national governments of the 14 countries participating in HNI’s global campaign to ratify ILO C177 and make more effective and relevant policies and legislation for home-based workers that ensure equality of treatment, social protection, and decent work for all home-based workers.
Today, we would like to repeat our slogan-
