Meet Zayde Abdalla, a home-based worker and artisan affiliated with HomeNet International (HNI) and a proud member of the LO ESPEJO union in Santiago, Chile. Living in one of the poorer districts in the southern part of the city, Zayde’s challenging living conditions have sparked her commitment to recycling and sustainability. She uses reclaimed materials, like wood pieces, windows, and other discarded items, transforming them into unique handcrafted creations.
Zayde sells her work at the weekly local market, occasional fairs organized by the municipality, and sometimes directly from her home. Balancing her role as an artisan, she also shares household duties and provides care for sick family members, like many other women juggling multiple responsibilities.
Zayde, like home-based workers across the globe, is fighting for recognition, equality, access to decent work, and greater visibility.Through her craft and perseverance, she highlights the resilience and creativity of home-based workers everywhere.
